Providence College announced this week that forward JJ Monteiro will join the Friars for the 2026‑27 season, bringing a blend of offensive skill and playoff experience to the program.
A Champion’s Journey to the Northeast
Monteiro capped his most recent junior campaign by leading the Sioux Falls Stampede to the Clark Cup, the championship of the United States Hockey League. He topped the team’s scoring in the playoffs and helped the club secure the title with a decisive contribution in the final series.
The forward posted career‑high numbers during the 2025‑26 season, recording 16 goals, 35 assists and 51 points in 48 games. Those totals represent a significant jump from his previous seasons and underscored his growth as a playmaker and finisher.
International play has also been a part of Monteiro’s development. He earned a bronze medal with Team Canada at the 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and has logged time in both the BCHL and the USHL, two of North America’s premier junior leagues.
His junior career includes a season with Salmon Arm of the BCHL, a three‑year stint at Mount St. Charles Academy in Rhode Island, and a split between the Waterloo Black Knights and Sioux Falls during the 2024‑25 campaign. Monteiro hails from Hudson, Massachusetts, where he first honed his skills on local rinks.
Providence’s coaching staff expressed enthusiasm about the addition, noting that Monteiro’s blend of size, work ethic and proven playoff performance should bolster the team’s depth and competitiveness in the Hockey East conference.
