Bob Rickman Takes the Helm of East Alton-Wood River Girls Basketball

Former Alton High coach returns to lead a young squad, blending union experience with a focus on fundamentals

Bob Rickman has been appointed head coach of the East Alton‑Wood River High School girls basketball program, taking over a team that finished the previous season with a 7‑25 record and looking to reshape its direction.

A Union Leader Turned Coach

Rickman spent the last five years as president of the Alton Education Association, an experience that sharpened his leadership skills and reinforced his commitment to student‑athlete development. His decision to return to coaching was directly tied to the insights and connections he gained while serving as a union president.

During his earlier tenure at Alton High from 2013 to 2017, Rickman compiled a 26‑80 record while teaching middle school basketball and staying engaged with the broader basketball community. He now returns to the same district while also continuing his role as a classroom teacher at Alton.

Reviving the Program

The new coaching staff includes Justin McPherson, who brings prior assistant experience and will help guide daily practices. Summer sessions have drawn about 12 players per meeting, providing an early foundation for the squad.

Athletic director Mark Beatty highlighted Rickman’s deep knowledge of the game and his natural ability to relate to high school athletes, expressing confidence that the program will progress steadily under his guidance.

Rickman’s strategy centers on mastering fundamentals and establishing a culture of long‑term success rather than immediate wins. He urged fans, parents and players to avoid judging the team during the early stages of the season, emphasizing patience as the foundation is built.
