A New Hub for Soccer in Fruitvale
A sleek soccer field now sits behind LIFE Academy and United for Success Academy in Oakland's Fruitvale district, replacing a cracked blacktop that students once used for makeshift games.
The project, years in the making, was financed through a collaboration among the Oakland Unified School District, the Bay Area Host Committee and private backers such as EA Sports.
Funding and Community Roots
The initiative traces its roots to 2013, when former LIFE Academy student Ben Gonzalez began rallying support for a dedicated soccer pitch. His advocacy was later chronicled in the documentary "Futbolistas 4 Life," which helped galvanize community momentum.
The field will be open to the public by reservation, while students enjoy priority access during school hours, ensuring that the space benefits both learners and neighbors.
A large mural at one end of the field pays tribute to "Futbolistas 4 Life" and the Fruitvale community, with artists expecting to complete the artwork within days.
Andrea Hopelain, senior vice president and general manager of EA Sports Publishing, said the field embodies the company's pledge to link physical activity with a love of the game.
Zaileen Janmohamed, CEO of the Bay Area Host Committee, added that sports have a profound capacity to shape young lives and strengthen community bonds.
Natalie Contreras‑Simpson, a LIFE Academy sophomore, described the new surface as "very fresh and renewed," while Vanessa Aguilar, whose daughter now plays there, called the facility "amazing" for fun, exercise and health.
City officials anticipate the field will become a lasting resource for youth sports, recreation and cultural expression across Fruitvale.
