The Stadium Debate Heads to the Council Chamber
Modesto’s City Council is set to convene on Tuesday evening to weigh the continuation of negotiations that could bring a professional soccer stadium to the heart of downtown.
A feasibility study commissioned by the municipality has sounded a cautionary note, concluding that the envisioned $90 million venue may not be financially sustainable given current revenue projections.
Proponents argue that the stadium would act as a catalyst for downtown revitalization, generating new tax revenue and attracting visitors, but the numbers presented by the study suggest a substantial funding gap.
Kosmont Companies, the consulting firm retained to assess the project, warned that closing the $43 million shortfall would require tapping into a general fund already strained by other obligations.
Councilmember Nick Bavaro, who initially promised the stadium would move forward, has recently described the plan as "dead on arrival," underscoring the shifting sentiment among officials.
The council meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in its chambers at 1010 10th Street, providing the public with a final forum to voice support or opposition before any final decision is taken.
