State Baseball Championships Begin Amid Rising Excitement
The 2026 Minnesota high school baseball state tournaments are now in full swing, with Class 2A quarterfinals and semifinals taking place at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud. The championship games for all four classes will be staged at Target Field in Minneapolis, giving the event a marquee venue that has hosted the tournament finals for years.
Two programs are generating particular buzz. Cannon Falls, making its fourth appearance in the state tournament, is chasing its first title in over a decade, while Winona Cotter, returning to the big stage after an 18‑year absence, is also seeking its inaugural championship. Both teams have built momentum throughout the regular season and are viewed as strong contenders.
The field includes a mix of seasoned contenders and newcomers. Cretin‑Derham Hall, Mahtomedi and Red Lake County are defending champions from last year, while Janesville‑Waldorf‑Pemberton, Ogilvie and Prior Lake are making their tournament debuts in 2026. The depth of competition is heightened by the presence of future Division I athletes.
Division I Commitments Add Star Power
Several players have committed to collegiate programs, including Ryan Hjellming of Cannon Falls, who will join the University of Minnesota roster. Other prospects have announced intentions to play at institutions such as Texas Tech University, Southern Illinois University‑Edwardsville, New Mexico State University and Illinois State University, underscoring the national reach of the talent on display.
Beyond the on‑field storylines, the tournament serves as a showcase for the state’s growing baseball culture, drawing families, scouts and media from across the region. With each game, the narrative of ambition and achievement continues to unfold, setting the stage for memorable moments that will be recounted for years to come.
