Florida High School Athletic Association Launches Open Division for 2025 Football Season

A new playoff format reshapes brackets and challenges traditional powerhouses

The Florida High School Athletic Association voted on June 9 to adopt an Open Division for the upcoming fall football season, a move that will reshape the state’s playoff structure by guaranteeing a spot for the eight highest‑ranked teams according to the MaxPreps statewide standings.

Under the new format, those eight squads will be divided into two round‑robin pools, each containing four teams, before the pool winners advance to a championship match that sits apart from the traditional class‑specific title games.

Because IMG Academy is barred from FHSAA postseason competition, the top seed will belong to Miami Northwestern, while Buchholz of Gainesville will claim the eighth and final position.

The Open Division does not alter the scheduled Class 7A championship between Lake Mary and Vero Beach; that contest will proceed as originally planned, preserving the existing hierarchy of state titles.

Earlier this year, Armwood and Buchholz reached the Class 6A semifinals, with Armwood falling narrowly to West Boca 14‑13, and Buchholz defeating Mandarin 27‑20 in the regional final, illustrating the competitive balance that the Open Division aims to preserve.

Seven‑time reigning Class 5A champion St. Thomas Aquinas would be excluded from the Open field, opening a pathway for teams such as No. 6 McArthur or No. 4 Coconut Creek to potentially contend for a state crown.

In Class 3A, the presence of Miami Northwestern, Miami Central and Raines would dramatically reshape the bracket, while the absence of Chaminade‑Madonna from the Class 1A picture would give the title race a markedly different tone.

Overall, the Open Division promises to inject fresh storylines into Florida high school football, blending the traditional class championships with a statewide showdown that could redefine how titles are contested.
