Groundbreaking Signals New Era for Oahe Hockey
The Oahe Hockey Association (OHA) recently celebrated the groundbreaking of the Ice Barn Renovation Project, the culmination of a three‑phase improvement plan that began with upgrades to refrigeration systems, boards and glass at both the Ice Barn and the Expo Center. Campaign President Nick Marso emphasized that the Ice Barn serves as a regional hub, offering year‑round ice access to thousands of youth and families across a 300‑mile radius.
Bret Afdahl, president of the OHA board, highlighted the project’s significance, noting that the renovated venue will become game‑ready and spectator‑capable, featuring new seating, fire‑suppression systems, expanded locker rooms, concessions, restrooms and warming areas. The transformation aims to host not only hockey but also figure skating, recreational skating, tournaments and community events.
The renovation is the final phase of a multi‑year campaign that has already secured $3.1 million of a $3.7 million goal, leaving roughly $600,000 to raise. Andy Zarecky, a key figure in the initiative, underscored the importance of closing the remaining funding gap to fully realize the Ice Barn’s potential as a regional asset.
Beyond sports, the upgraded facility is projected to generate approximately $450,000 annually in additional visitor spending for Pierre and Fort Pierre, boosting local businesses through tournaments, competitions and special events. Construction will be overseen by Midwest Construction, with work expected to continue throughout the coming months.
The groundbreaking also launches the public phase of the Capitalize on the Future Campaign, inviting individuals, families and businesses to contribute toward the remaining funds and help shape the future of youth hockey in central South Dakota.
