The early exit prompted a hard look at the roster and a clear directive from head coach Jay Johnson: the team must become more aggressive in talent acquisition.
Johnson, now in his third year at the helm, has said the program will be more selective about which portal players to pursue, but he also emphasized that the bar for quality will be higher than ever. "We’re not just adding bodies; we’re adding impact," he remarked during a recent press conference.
The first major addition came in the form of Bino Watters, a former Notre Dame outfielder who earned a reputation as a power hitter in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Watters brings a track record of slugging at the power‑conference level and is projected as one of the top‑150 prospects in the 2026 transfer class, drawing interest from Major League scouts.
Joining him is Landon Hood, a right‑handed pitcher who spent his college career at Gonzaga. Hood’s fastball velocity and command have placed him among the most promising arms in the portal, and his draft eligibility adds a professional upside to the Tigers’ rotation.
The third newcomer, Dawson Park, arrives from Texas State, where he established himself as a reliable shortstop with solid defensive metrics.
