A Fresh Start on the Court
Western Michigan University unveiled its new head coach, Kahil Fennell, as the team took to the floor for its first official practice of the season. The session marked the debut of a roster composed entirely of fresh faces, with fourteen newcomers and no players returning from the previous year.
Fennell emphasized building cohesion and improving defensive skills during the first practice. He pointed to a 30‑minute film study followed by twenty‑five minutes of drills designed to sharpen the squad’s ability to process information quickly and value defense above all else. Fennell actively coached and provided feedback throughout the session.
The practice drew players from a scattering of distant locales, including Lithuania’s Augustinas Kiudulas, Latvia’s Janis Jünemann, and several prospects from the United States such as Utah’s Jordan Sigmon, Michigan’s Isaac Finlinson, and Michigan natives Ben Johnson, Ramere Draper, and Rob Lee Jr. Their diverse backgrounds bring a blend of international experience and local talent to the roster.
While the enthusiasm in the gym was palpable, Fennell acknowledged that the transition to Division I will test the group’s resilience. Many of the athletes have come through the transfer portal and are unaccustomed to the heightened physicality of college basketball at this level.
The coach’s ultimate aim is to build a foundation that can sustain success while keeping injuries at bay. By fostering cohesion early and demanding defensive intensity, he hopes the Broncos can adapt swiftly and compete effectively in the coming season.
