Illinois Basketball Coach Brad Underwood Secures Key Recruits for Upcoming Season

A look at the Illini's strategic offseason moves and top‑ranked recruiting class

Illinois basketball coach Brad Underwood entered the offseason with a clear priority: keep the core that helped the program reach the Final Four and maintain its recent surge in the NCAA tournament.

Building Around Retention

His first move was to lock in Lincoln Williams, a standout from Kankakee who earned a reputation as one of the state’s top prospects. Williams signed with the Illini after a long‑term recruitment, bringing averages of 26 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.0 blocks per game.

The coaching staff also turned its attention to the high school market, adding Quentin Coleman and Zavier Zens to the roster. Coleman posted 23.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.7 steals in his senior year, while Zens contributed 23.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.4 assists.

Underwood praised Stefan Vaaks, calling him the best offensive player available in the transfer portal, and noted that the incoming class has been ranked among the nation’s elite, trailing only Duke, Arkansas, Kansas, Michigan, and Michigan State.

The Illini’s momentum is underscored by a six‑year streak of NCAA tournament appearances and a 2024 Elite Eight run, a stretch in which they have compiled a 167‑71 record over the past seven seasons.

By blending proven returnees with high‑school talent, Illinois aims to preserve its competitive edge and continue its ascent in the Big Ten and beyond.
