Atlanta’s Soccer Scene Expands with Community‑Driven Leagues and Tournaments

Free programs and pop‑up fields at MARTA stations bring the sport to a wider audience

The excitement surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup has sparked a wave of grassroots soccer activity across Atlanta, where community groups are reshaping how residents engage with the sport.

Soccer in the Streets (SITS), an organization founded in 1989, provides free programming that transforms vacant areas around MARTA stations into accessible playing fields. Its Station Soccer initiative currently operates at Five Points, Kensington, East Lake, West End, East Point and Lindbergh, turning transit hubs into vibrant soccer destinations.

Catalina Dunn, SITS’s marketing manager, explained that the concept originated from board member Sanjay Patel, who saw untapped space at MARTA stations as ideal locations for community‑focused soccer venues. By offering free programs in these high‑traffic areas, SITS aims to break down economic and geographic barriers to participation.

Culture Cup: A Festival of Soccer, Music and Art

This summer SITS will host the Culture Cup, an adult soccer tournament that blends competitive matches with live music, food vendors and art installations. The event exemplifies the organization’s broader mission to weave soccer into the cultural fabric of Atlanta.

Another key player, Sons of Pitches FC (SOPFC), was founded in 2014 and now offers a diverse portfolio of adult leagues, including 7v7 competitions, open divisions, co‑ed formats and a dedicated league for women and non‑binary players. The club also runs beginner‑only sessions designed to welcome newcomers to the sport.

SOPFC has partnered with DeKalb County Schools and Atlanta Public Schools to expand its outreach, organizing events such as Free Intro to Soccer (FITS), Atlanta Streets Alive and family‑oriented pickup sessions. These collaborations underscore the club’s commitment to community building beyond the pitch.

Other local groups, including Silverbacks Park and the Atlanta Sport and Social Club, similarly host soccer leagues and events, reinforcing Atlanta’s growing reputation as a hub for inclusive, community‑driven soccer initiatives.
