Spitfires ink Drake Gram in priority selection coup

The Michigan-born defenceman joins Windsor, aiming to bolster the lineup

The Windsor Spitfires announced the addition of defenceman Drake Gram, a 2024 OHL Priority Selection pick, to their roster on Tuesday. The move comes after a draft season in which Gram recorded 26 points in 57 games and followed it up with a strong U16 campaign that yielded 30 points in 45 contests.

A hometown connection

Gram hails from Gross Point Park, Michigan, and spent his formative years developing within the Detroit Little Caesars organization. He returned to that program for his U16 season, where his 30‑point output underscored his offensive capabilities as a blue‑liner.

After his Ontario Hockey League draft year, Gram ventured into the NAHL, suiting up for the Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks, and later joined the USHL’s Omaha Lancers. In 35 games with the Lancers he contributed six points, showcasing his adaptability across North American junior circuits.

GM’s endorsement

General manager Bill Bowler praised the youngster’s trajectory, noting that Gram’s blend of defensive reliability and offensive upside aligns with the Spitfires’ long‑term vision. "Drake’s development has been steady, and his versatility will add depth to our back end," Bowler remarked in the official announcement.

Gram himself voiced excitement about the next chapter, citing the Spitfires’ storied history and proximity to his home state as factors that made the decision straightforward. He indicated a readiness to contribute immediately while embracing the challenge of competing at a higher level.

Looking ahead

The organization anticipates that Gram’s experience in both the NAHL and USHL will translate into a smoother transition to the OHL’s pace. With a focus on integrating him into the lineup, the Spitfires hope the Michigan native can help anchor a defensive core that has shown growth in recent seasons.
