Mikhail McLean Takes the Helm of Bahamas Men’s National Team

The former Kentucky assistant returns home to lead the island nation's quest for World Cup qualification

A Homecoming for McLean

Mikhail McLean, a native of the Bahamas and longtime assistant with the Kentucky Wildcats, has been appointed head coach of the Bahamas men's national team, a role he will assume in July as the squad enters the World Cup qualifying cycle.

McLean will continue to serve as an assistant with Kentucky while leading the Bahamian side, a dual commitment that means he will miss portions of the Wildcats' summer practice but will remain on the staff under head coach Mark Pope.

His involvement with the Bahamas program dates back to 2021, when he first joined the national team's coaching staff after stints as an assistant at Lamar University and as a player at the University of Houston, where he appeared in 101 collegiate games.

Qualifying Schedule and Venues

The Bahamas currently sit 1‑3 in the first round of the World Cup Americas Qualifiers and must win two home games to advance to the second round; their first match under McLean's direction is scheduled for July 3 against Jamaica, followed by a clash with Puerto Rico on July 6.

Both games will be played at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs National Gymnasium in Nassau, providing the team with a familiar home‑court advantage as they chase a historic qualification.

McLean's appointment is seen as a strategic move to blend his NBA‑level playing experience with deep roots in Bahamian basketball, a combination that could prove pivotal as the nation seeks its first World Cup appearance.
