Penn State Tight End Andrew Rappleyea Eyes Breakout 2026 Season

A new coaching staff and a wave of roster additions set the stage for a pivotal year for the Nittany Lions' offense.

Penn State is gearing up for the 2026 football season under its new head coach, Matt Campbell. The program has undertaken a massive overhaul, bringing in more than 50 fresh players who are expected to reshape the depth chart and add depth across the roster.

Among the returning standouts is tight end Andrew Rappleyea, a redshirt junior who has drawn attention for his blend of size, athleticism and experience. Originally committed to Michigan, Rappleyea ultimately chose Penn State, citing the success of former Nittany Lion tight ends such as Pat Freiermuth and Mike Gesicki as a major influence.

In high school, Rappleyea posted 23 receptions for 499 yards and six touchdowns while also contributing on defense. After arriving on campus, he added significant weight and quickly earned a leading role among freshman offensive skill players, logging the most game snaps of any newcomer in the 2024 season.

A Late‑Season Surge

A knee injury sustained in practice cut his 2024 campaign short, but Rappleyea returned in preseason camp and worked his way into the starting lineup, starting the final six games of the year. He finished the season with 20 catches for 180 yards and three touchdowns, earning commendation from interim head coach Terry Smith for his resilience and production.

Looking ahead, Rappleyea is expected to be a cornerstone of the 2026 offense, forming a tight end trio with Ben Brahmer and Gabe Burkle. The group aims to build on the late‑season momentum and provide a versatile weapon for the new coaching staff. Despite a setback in late February, he is projected to be fully healthy by the summer and will remain eligible through the 2027 season.

The broader roster movement underscores the program’s aggressive recruiting approach. The influx of new talent, combined with the experience of returning players, positions Penn State to compete strongly within the Big Ten and beyond.
