Concordia University Irvine has named Mark Carbone its new assistant coach for the men’s basketball program, tapping a veteran who blends NCAA Division I playing experience with a track record of elevating team performance.
Carbone’s career spans both the hardwood and the sidelines, having competed at the highest levels of college basketball before transitioning into coaching. His playing years at San Diego State University, the University of New Hampshire and California Baptist University gave him a deep understanding of the game’s nuances, a foundation he now brings to his coaching philosophy.
Carbone’s Coaching Legacy
Over the past five years, Carbone has honed his craft as an assistant coach at several institutions, most recently serving as assistant head coach at Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut, where he helped guide the Eagles to an 11‑9 conference record and a Top‑5 league ranking for the third straight season.
Prior to his stint at Post, Carbone spent three years at Citrus College in Glendora, California, where he orchestrated an up‑tempo offense that averaged 90 points per game and posted a .840 win percentage, while also directing summer camps that generated nearly $100,000 for the program.
His playing résumé includes a five‑year stretch in NCAA Division I, where he contributed at San Diego State, UNH and Cal Baptist, laying the groundwork for a coaching perspective rooted in both competitiveness and academic rigor.
Carbone will work closely with new CUI head coach Scott Clark, who was hired in April, forming a partnership that the university hopes will accelerate the program’s ascent in the highly competitive NCAA Division II landscape.
A 2020 graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and a 2022 Master of Science in Sport Management from California Baptist University, Carbone combines scholarly insight with practical basketball acumen.
The university’s athletic director expressed confidence that Carbone’s blend of experience and strategic insight will help the Golden Eagles contend for conference titles and attract top talent in the coming seasons.
