A New Era for JMU Men's Soccer
James Madison University's men's soccer program has unveiled its 2026 recruiting class, a blend of eleven transfers and four freshmen that promises to reshape the roster ahead of the upcoming season.
The class is distributed across seven midfielders, five defenders, two goalkeepers and a single forward, giving Head Coach Paul Zazenski a versatile pool of talent. Zazenski emphasized that nine of the newcomers have already navigated a semester at JMU, smoothing their transition into collegiate play.
Among the arrivals is Daniel Bunk, a technical midfielder from Germany who previously wore the colors of the German U19 National Team, and Carlos Cámara Tur, a Spanish forward who captured a NJCAA national title with Iowa Western in 2024. Each player brings a distinct story, from Pieter Hengeveld's academy roots at VVV Venlo to Ashton Khory's Canadian background that earned him Second Team All‑American honors.
The roster also features Leon Kondic, a Slovenian midfielder who competed in the Druga Liga, and Drew Mattingly, a Maryland goalkeeper who helped his high school to back‑to‑back MIAA Championship titles. International representation extends to Håkon Rake of Norway, who was named to the All‑CACC First Team in 2025, and Sebastien Six, a Belgian defender with experience at U21 Al Jazira in Abu Dhabi.
Coach Zazenski highlighted the potential impact of these recruits, noting that their diverse experiences will enrich the team's dynamics. The group will make its first on‑field appearance on August 20, 2026, when JMU hosts Rider.
The upcoming season will see JMU face a slate of opponents including traditional rivals such as Clemson University, Longwood University and Presbyterian College, while also traveling to venues across the United States and abroad. The program's ambition is reflected in its non‑conference schedule, which includes matches against institutions like Fort Hays State University and Binghamton University.
