Kevin Schnall has been named the 33rd head coach of the University of South Carolina baseball program, signing a five‑year agreement that guarantees a starting salary of $1.3 million and includes scheduled raises tied to performance milestones.
A Strategic Move for the Gamecocks
The contract is structured to reward success: annual increments of $50,000 begin in 2027, and the deal can automatically extend by a year up to three times if the team reaches a Super Regional or the College World Series. Additional bonuses of $50,000, $75,000 or $150,000 are built in for a Super Regional appearance, a CWS berth or a national championship, respectively.
Schnall arrives after a celebrated stint at Coastal Carolina, where he guided the Chanticleers to the 2025 national championship series and compiled a 93‑36 record over the past two and a half seasons. He originally returned to the program in 2016 as associate head coach during their title‑winning campaign.
His move comes at a turbulent moment for the Gamecocks, who have struggled with recent losing records and a wave of players entering the transfer portal. The university recently parted ways with former coach Paul Mainieri, creating an opening that Schnall is now filling.
The school is also paying a $600,000 buyout to Coastal Carolina to secure Schnall’s services, while a separate buyout clause protects the coach should he choose to leave, ranging from $3 million in the first year to $450,000 in the fifth.
Athletic director Jeremy Foley praised Schnall’s recruiting acumen and his ability to develop talent, noting that the new contract aligns with the program’s ambition to compete consistently at the national level.
