Billings Friends Turn High School Flag Football Bond into College Scholarships at Hastings

Krista Kvilhaug and Macy Wegner embark on a shared journey to play on Hastings College’s inaugural women’s flag football team, rooming together and coaching the next generation.

Krista Kvilhaug and Macy Wegner, longtime friends from Billings, Montana, have both committed to join Hastings College’s inaugural women’s flag football program, marking a milestone for the school and the sport.

Their partnership began when Wegner persuaded Kvilhaug to try flag football in high school, a suggestion that opened the door to scholarship offers and a collegiate pathway they hadn’t imagined.

Kvilhaug originally planned to attend Bozeman to study nursing, but a visit to Hastings convinced her to pivot, while Wegner had already secured her spot after the same campus tour.

The surprise twist came when the two realized they would be roommates at Hastings, turning a friendship into a shared living and playing experience.

A Shared Path to the Field

Head coach Steve Nieto noticed Kvilhaug’s enthusiasm after Wegner’s signing, and both women have since helped lead a flag football camp at West, using their experience to inspire younger players.

Kvilhaug says the growth of women’s flag football creates a unique avenue for athletes who may not fit the traditional mold of other sports, offering a chance to compete and be seen.
