Cliff Freeland Exits St. Clair Girls Soccer After Eight-Year Tenure

The veteran coach, celebrated for building a relentless program, cites exhaustion as he steps down, while the school seeks his successor.

Cliff Freeland, a name synonymous with tenacity on the field, announced his resignation as the girls soccer coach at St. Clair High School on Monday, June 8, bringing to a close an eight‑year chapter that reshaped the program.

Freeland’s journey to the helm began long before his coaching career; he first earned notice as a hard‑nosed player on the 1994 St. Clair High School boys basketball team, a foundation that informed his relentless approach to building a soccer culture.

Under his guidance the Saints climbed through the Macomb Area Conference’s various divisions, amassing six Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 district championships and three league titles, while never posting a losing season.

A Legacy of Grit

The coach often spoke of instilling grit, toughness and a strong work ethic, qualities that became the hallmark of a team that grew into a state‑recognized powerhouse.

In his resignation statement Freeland cited physical and mental exhaustion as the primary reasons for stepping away, yet he expressed pride in the culture he cultivated and excitement for the program’s future.

The East China School District, which oversees St. Clair High School, is now open to applications for the vacant coaching position, inviting new leadership to build on the foundation Freeland laid.

While the search begins, Freeland says he will remain supportive of the team from afar, confident that the standards he set will continue to drive success.
