Harley’s Game: Frame Football Rising in Gloucester After Cancer Battle

Supported by Sport England, a teenage survivor and his teammates are inviting newcomers to experience a sport built for wheelchair users.

At 12, Harley received a diagnosis of osteosarcoma, a bone cancer that required the removal of part of his leg and left him partially paralyzed. The news marked the end of his hopes of playing traditional football, and even specialized variants such as amputee or powerchair football did not fit his needs.

Finding a new way to play

Instead, Harley discovered frame football, a version of the sport designed for people who use wheelchairs. The game uses a specially designed frame that allows participants to maneuver and compete on an even playing field, turning what seemed like a limitation into a new avenue for athletic expression.

A community effort

Harley's mother, Donna, took the initiative to launch a frame football team in Gloucester. With a grant from Sport England, the team was able to secure equipment, court time, and a welcoming environment for anyone interested in joining.

The team practices regularly at Holmleigh Park Sports Centre in Tuffley, Gloucester. Because the funding from Sport England covers all participation costs, players do not have to pay any fees to take part, removing financial barriers that often discourage newcomers.

Looking ahead

Harley has been playing frame football for two years and describes the sport as a source of joy and normalcy after his surgery. His teammate Jake, who also benefits from the sessions, speaks of the camaraderie and tournament opportunities that have transformed his confidence on and off the court.

Both Harley and Jake are actively looking for more players, believing that a larger group will enrich the experience and keep the sport thriving in the region. Their story highlights how community support, combined with targeted funding, can create inclusive opportunities where they might otherwise be absent.
