From Poughkeepsie to the national stage
Owen Paino, a standout from Roy C. Ketcham High School in Poughkeepsie, is set to take the field for Ole Miss as the Rebels gear up for the College World Series. The senior right‑hander has been a constant presence in the lineup, starting 33 games this season and delivering a .246 batting average with five home runs and 24 RBIs.
His journey to Oxford began long before he ever wore the Ole Miss uniform. At Ketcham, Paino honed his craft under the guidance of coach Pat Mealy, a mentor he credits for instilling discipline and a love for the game. The duo helped the team capture the 2023 Class AA state championship, and Paino’s performance earned him the 2024 New York Gatorade Player of the Year honor.
Choosing college over the 2024 MLB Draft, Paino elected to enroll at Ole Miss, where he quickly became a mainstay in the everyday lineup. His on‑base percentage has climbed to .383, reflecting a patient approach at the plate that complements his power surge.
Beyond the box score, Paino hopes to serve as a beacon for youngsters back home. “I want kids in Poughkeepsie to see that a path to the big leagues is possible,” he says, noting that growing up he idolized former MLB All‑Star Joe Panik, whose work ethic and humility left a lasting impression.
As the Rebels prepare for the tournament, Paino’s blend of experience, statistical growth and community focus makes him one of the most compelling storylines of the season. His preparation is not just about personal accolades but about leaving a legacy that inspires the next generation of local talent.
