Mark Connolly, a 34‑year‑old defender who hung up his boots to take on a new responsibilities, has been appointed director of football at Derry City.
A career built on resilience
Connolly’s playing journey took him from Bolton Wanderers and Crawley Town in England to Kilmarnock and Dundee United in Scotland, before he returned to Ireland to join Derry City in 2022. A loan spell at Dundalk preceded his permanent move, and he was instrumental in the club’s triumphant 2022 FAI Cup campaign.
Speaking about his transition from the pitch to the boardroom, Connolly said he was eager to contribute to the club’s future, citing the professionalism he learned from former manager Ruaidhri Higgins as a guiding influence.
Higgins hails Connolly’s impact
Higgins, who previously managed Connolly at Coleraine, praised the former defender’s contributions, describing him as a player who “had a great impact on the team” and whose professionalism set a standard for younger squad members.
The appointment comes as Derry City sit sixth in the League of Ireland Premier Division, a position that reflects both the club’s recent progress and the challenges that lie ahead. Club officials say Connolly’s blend of playing experience and tactical insight makes him well‑suited to help steer the team toward a more ambitious future.
