Harkins began his scouting journey in 2008 with the Plymouth Whalers, quickly earning a reputation for his keen eye for talent. In later years he moved to the Flint Firebirds, assuming a similar leadership role that allowed him to influence prospects throughout the OHL. His evaluations contributed to several player breakthroughs, most notably the preparation of Ed Jovanovski, who was selected first overall in the 1994 NHL Draft after Harkins represented him as a player agent.
Family roots in hockey
Beyond his professional achievements, Harkins hailed from a hockey‑oriented family. His brothers, Todd and Brett, both played in the National Hockey League, and his nephew Jansen Harkins currently skates for the Anaheim Ducks. The Harkins lineage thus reflects a deep‑rooted connection to the sport that stretches across generations.
Originally from North Ridgeville, Ohio, Harkins later settled in Naples, Florida. His trans‑national background added a unique dimension to his career, linking scouting networks in both the United States and Canada.
The OHL, together with partner teams such as the Windsor Spitfires and the National Hockey League, issued statements praising Harkins’ contributions and expressing sympathy for his relatives.
