University of Florida Unveils $1.45 Billion Renovation Plan for The Swamp

The project aims to modernize Ben Hill Griffin Stadium while preserving its iconic character and fan experience.

The University of Florida has announced a $1.45 billion renovation of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, affectionately known as The Swamp, positioning the project as the most expensive stadium upgrade in college football history.

Preserving the Iconic Character

The redesign, led by Manhattan Construction Company in partnership with AECOM‑Hunt, seeks to modernize the venue while safeguarding the intimate atmosphere that has defined Gators football for generations.

Key elements include premium seating options, expanded concourses, and upgraded entry points and concession areas, all intended to enhance fan comfort without altering the stadium’s 88,548‑seat capacity or the beloved lower bowl and winged walls.

Construction is slated to commence after the current season and is expected to be completed by 2030, with financing secured through a mix of private donations and long‑term debt.

A New Era for Florida Football

The ambitious scope places Florida’s investment in the same league as other major sports venues, such as Penn State’s $700 million Beaver Stadium renovation, Texas A&M’s $484 million Kyle Field overhaul, and the $1.6 billion Mercedes‑Benz Stadium that opened in 2017.

University athletic director Scott Stricklin presented the plan to the board of trustees, emphasizing that the project will create an even more intimidating environment for opponents while preserving the unique game‑day experience that fans cherish.
