Spain's U20 Squad Gears Up for EuroBasket
Iker Garmendia and Raúl Villar, both alumni of Elon University, have earned spots in the Spanish Men’s U20 national team training camp that opens on June 16 in Utebo, a town on the outskirts of Zaragoza. Their inclusion reflects the country’s confidence in the duo’s potential ahead of the 2026 FIBA U20 EuroBasket.
The camp marks the next step in a trajectory that began with early successes at the youth level. Villar, who captained Spain to the U18 A European Championship last summer, brings leadership and a proven knack for clutch performances. Garmendia, a 6‑foot‑9 forward, previously helped Spain secure silver medals at the 2022 and 2024 U16 and U18 European Championships, underscoring his consistency on the international stage.
From Campus to Continental Competition
Both players also carry the imprint of their collegiate careers. Garmendia, one of three scholarship athletes returning for the 2025‑26 season, logged 4.6 minutes per game and contributed 220 pounds of interior presence, while Villar, after a freshman year at Charlotte, signed with the Phoenix in late April and averaged 3.2 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 12 minutes per contest.
The 2026 FIBA U20 EuroBasket is slated for July 11‑19 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where the final 12‑player roster will be trimmed before the team departs. The tournament will test the Spanish side against Europe’s elite prospects, and the early chemistry observed in Utebo could prove decisive.
Coaches and analysts alike see the camp as a laboratory for blending veteran poise with fresh talent. As the roster finalization date approaches, the performances of Garmendia and Villar will be closely watched, not only for their personal aspirations but also for how they might shape Spain’s pursuit of a podium finish in Ljubljana.
