A Strategic Homecoming
Longwood University announced this week that Donovan Williams will join the men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach, bringing a decade of collegiate experience back to the Farmville campus.
Williams arrives after stints at Oral Roberts, the University of South Florida, Cornell, Princeton, Lafayette and the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he contributed to programs that captured conference titles and earned postseason berths.
His most recent season at USF saw the Bulls finish with a 25‑8 record, a performance that helped the team secure a top‑25 ranking and a berth in the NCAA tournament.
Before his coaching career, Williams starred at Park University, captaining the team to the NAIA Sweet 16 and earning a reputation as a floor leader. He later completed a bachelor’s degree in business administration at Park and a master’s in sports administration at Georgia State.
‘I’m thrilled to be back at Longwood,’ Williams said in a statement. ‘Coach Ronnie Thomas and I share a vision for building a championship culture, and I look forward to helping our student‑athletes reach their full potential.’
The university hopes the hire will revitalize a program that has already tasted success, including a 2022 championship and a run to the NCAA National Tournament. Athletic director Ronnie Thomas praised Williams’ track record and his ability to ‘change lives on and off the court.’
With his blend of playing experience, academic credentials and proven coaching acumen, Williams is expected to play a pivotal role in the Lancers’ pursuit of Big South titles and deeper NCAA tournament runs.
