Mark Jackson, Northwestern’s vice president for athletics and recreation, has been appointed to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Selection Committee for a five‑year term, a move that places him at the center of the association’s most visible decision‑making body.
The Expanding Tournament Landscape
The committee, which determines the tournament bracket and now the upcoming 76‑team field for 2027, will be led by Jackson as it prepares for the expansion, a shift that reflects the NCAA’s ambition to broaden access while maintaining competitive integrity.
Jackson brings a proven record of championship success; during his tenure at Northwestern he helped the Wildcats capture four national titles and secured hosting rights for the 2026 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship Weekend. Prior to joining Northwestern in 2024, he served as athletic director at Villanova, where the program captured men’s basketball championships in 2016 and 2018.
His earlier stint on the committee in 2024, appointed by the Big East Conference, gave him a taste of the deliberations that shape the tournament’s structure, and his subsequent elevation reflects the confidence placed in his judgment by fellow administrators.
The committee’s membership comprises athletic directors and senior administrators from Division I institutions, and its meetings occur throughout the year as the organization refines selection criteria, seeding protocols and championship logistics.
Martin Newton, who will chair the panel during the 2026‑27 season, praised Jackson’s appointment, noting that his blend of operational experience and strategic vision will be instrumental as the NCAA navigates the complexities of a larger bracket.
The expansion to 76 teams, slated for implementation in 2027, is expected to increase revenue streams for member schools and provide more student‑athletes with national exposure, a development that aligns with the NCAA’s broader mission of fostering competitive opportunities across the collegiate landscape.
