Continuity as the Foundation
Colorado Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic announced that the organization will keep its core group of players and coaching staff intact for the upcoming season. Speaking after a sweep by the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final, Sakic highlighted the team’s record‑breaking regular season, which culminated in a franchise‑best 121 points and the Presidents’ Trophy.
The Avalanche finished the campaign with the league’s best record, a feat that earned widespread praise for the club’s fast‑paced style and depth. Sakic said the players’ belief in head coach Jared Bednar remained strong, noting that the coaching staff has earned the respect of the locker room despite the early exit.
While the sweep raised questions about the team’s playoff performance, Sakic downplayed any notion of systemic issues, attributing the loss to execution rather than philosophy. He emphasized that the club will focus on refining specific areas and ensuring the roster is equipped to contend for the Stanley Cup.
Among the priority items on the agenda is a contract extension for star defenseman Cale Makar, whom Sakic described as a cornerstone of the franchise’s future. The front office also plans to retain all assistant coaches, including Dave Hakstol, and to maintain the current blend of talent and leadership.
Owner Josh Kroenke echoed Sakic’s commitment to continuity, stating that the organization is confident in the development of its core group and the long‑term vision for sustained success. The Avalanche hope that stability on and off the ice will translate into a deeper playoff run next year.
