A Dual Role in College Sports Governance
Pete Bevacqua, the athletic director at the University of Notre Dame, has been selected to serve on the NCAA Division I men’s basketball selection committee, the body that determines the teams, seeds and brackets for the annual March Madness tournament.
His four‑year term will commence on July 1, positioning him at the heart of the process that shapes the national championship field each spring.
Bevacqua stands out as the only current athletics director who simultaneously holds a seat on both the NCAA men’s basketball committee and the College Football Playoff management committee, a dual appointment that underscores his influence across multiple high‑profile sports.
He follows in the footsteps of Gene Corrigan, who became the first Notre Dame AD to sit on an NCAA men’s basketball committee, serving from 1981 through 1987, thereby linking the university to a long tradition of committee leadership.
The selection committee’s mandate extends beyond mere team selection; it also determines seeding and constructs the tournament bracket, making the members’ expertise and judgment critical to the integrity and competitiveness of March Madness.
