A decade of ground game
Under Coach Kalani Sitake, who has steered the program for the last ten years, the Cougars have oscillated between two distinct rushing philosophies. In seasons that turn out strong, a single back often shoulders the bulk of the carries, delivering the bulk of the yardage. When the team hits a rough patch, the offense reverts to a more balanced committee, spreading the load across multiple players.
The early foundation
The foundation of that identity was laid early in the decade when Jamaal Williams became the school’s all‑time leading rusher in 2016, amassing 1,375 yards and 12 touchdowns. His production set a benchmark that subsequent backs would measure themselves against.
Allgeier’s record season
Tyler Allgeier emerged as the most prolific of the era, first breaking out in 2020 with 1,130 yards and 13 touchdowns, then shattering the single‑season record in 2021 with 1,606 yards and 23 touchdowns. His back‑to‑back campaigns remain reference points for any aspiring Cougars back.
Brooks and the committee years
In 2022, Chris Brooks carried the load with 817 yards and six touchdowns, illustrating how the offense could still produce a reliable lead back even when the spotlight was shared. That season also highlighted the committee approach that the staff employs when a singular star is absent.
Martin’s recent surge
More recently, LJ Martin has been the face of the rushing attack, topping the team in 2023, 2024 and 2025 despite recurring injuries. His ability to contribute significant yardage while battling physical setbacks underscores the resilience of the position group.
The pattern of a primary back in good years and a rotating group in down years reflects the strategic flexibility that Coach Sitake values, allowing the Cougars to adapt their ground game to the strengths of each roster.
