A New Chapter in the SEC
Jay Abernathy, a sophomore outfielder from Acworth, Georgia, is preparing to continue his collegiate career at the University of Oklahoma after two seasons with the Tennessee Volunteers.
During his tenure at Tennessee he appeared in 106 games, starting 66 of them, and posted a .255 career batting average with four home runs, 27 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. He split his defensive responsibilities between second base and center field, showcasing a versatile skill set.
Early in the season Abernathy batted leadoff, but as the lineup solidified he found himself hitting ninth, a shift that reflected both his adaptability and the depth of the Volunteers’ roster.
His speed proved a constant threat, highlighted by a team‑leading nine stolen bases, though his SEC statistics dipped to a .154 average and a .241 on‑base percentage, underscoring the increased competition at that level.
Looking Ahead
The transfer marks the third outgoing move from Tennessee this cycle and makes Abernathy the first player to remain within the SEC after departing the Volunteers. At the same time, first baseman Evan Hankins has committed to Virginia Tech, and catcher/outfielder Cash Williams is headed to the University of Virginia, signaling a wave of movement among top prospects.
For Oklahoma, the addition of Abernathy adds a proven leadoff threat and a defensive option in the outfield, positioning the Sooners to deepen their lineup as they aim for a strong finish in the upcoming season.
