Felicia Teeter Makes History as First Female Coach at John Carroll University

Veteran leader joins JCU football staff, aiming to inspire women and unify programs

A New Era for JCU Football

Felicia Teeter is making history at John Carroll University, becoming the first woman to join the school’s football coaching staff. Her appointment as running backs coach and head coach of the newly launched women’s flag football program signals a bold step toward greater inclusion in a traditionally male‑dominated sport.

Teeter’s journey to the sidelines spans two decades of service. After ten years of active duty in the U.S. Army, she spent twenty years as a civilian employee of the Department of Defense, honing leadership and strategic skills that now inform her coaching philosophy.

In addition to her role with the men’s team, Teeter will guide the university’s inaugural women’s flag football program. She believes the initiative will create a seamless cultural bridge between the men’s and women’s squads, fostering an environment where standards of play are applied equally, regardless of gender.

Head coach Brian Polian, who recruited Teeter, emphasized that her hiring was based on pure coaching merit. “Felicia is the best football coach for the job,” Polian said, underscoring that competence, not novelty, drove the decision.

Teeter’s own perspective is modest. She acknowledges that her presence may appear groundbreaking to some, yet she sees it as part of a broader effort to normalize female participation in football. “I’m grateful to be an inspiration to other women who want to be involved in the sport,” she remarked.

Her experience at previous institutions — Lubbock Independent School District in Texas, Pratt Community College, and Bethel College — provided a foundation for this latest challenge. Each stop added layers of tactical insight and player development expertise that she now brings to JCU.

Beyond the field, Teeter hopes her story will encourage more women to pursue careers in sports coaching and administration. By demonstrating that leadership can emerge from diverse backgrounds, she aims to expand opportunities across the football ecosystem.
