Yale University announced that three incoming first‑year athletes — Sophie Buchowski, Angelina Che and Lucy Pigg — have earned places on the 2026 USA Field Hockey Junior Nexus Championship roster. The selection marks a continuation of each player’s rapid ascent within the sport’s national development system.
A Milestone in Their Development
The trio will travel to Virginia Beach, Virginia, for the championship, which runs from July 17‑19, 2026. The event serves as a showcase for the Olympic Development Pathway Program, offering participants a direct pipeline to the U.S. Junior National Teams.
Buchowski, a native of Connecticut, brings a record of four Nexus appearances and first‑team NFHCA all‑region honors, while Che, hailing from Missouri, boasts six Nexus selections and three first‑team NFHCA all‑region nods. Pigg, from Massachusetts, has also logged four Nexus participations and earned NFHCA all‑region and two‑time all‑state recognitions.
The Nexus Championship’s Evolution
Originally launched in 2021 as the National Futures Championship, the Junior Nexus Championship was rebranded to reflect its expanded role in the talent identification process. A year later, the Senior Nexus Championship replaced the Young Women’s National Championship, further consolidating USA Field Hockey’s developmental structure.
Beyond the July tournament, standout performances can lead to invitations to additional national camps and training opportunities, sharpening the athletes’ prospects for future senior team consideration.
Looking Ahead
The upcoming championship will not only highlight the achievements of Buchowski, Che and Pigg but also underscore Yale’s growing influence in collegiate field hockey talent pipelines. As the athletes prepare for the event, the broader hockey community anticipates how their participation will shape the next generation of U.S. national team prospects.
