Black Gold Sports Senior Games Conclude with Scholarship Opportunities
The recent UIL season for area baseball and softball teams has drawn to a close, culminating in the Black Gold Sports Senior Games at Joe Spikes Field in Lamesa. Now in its fifth iteration for baseball and its inaugural year for softball, the event has become a premier showcase for high school athletes aiming to catch the eye of college recruiters.
Chris Arrendondo, senior organizer of Black Gold Sports, notes that the competition began as a modest curtain call for the region’s top baseball players but has expanded to include softball and a broader array of schools. This growth has attracted junior college and university scouts from across West Texas, eager to evaluate the talent on display.
The schedule featured small‑school baseball at 5 p.m., followed by big‑school baseball at 7:45 p.m., with the softball game kicking off at 7 p.m. Organizers highlighted that scholarships were awarded to several participants last year, and the University of Southwest was among the institutions that secured four promising athletes from the pool.
Teams representing Estacado, Hale Center, New Deal, Brownfield and numerous other schools competed across both small and large school divisions, underscoring the depth of talent in the region. The event’s blend of competition and exposure continues to shape the next chapter for many young athletes.
Looking Forward
As college scouting cycles intensify, the Black Gold Sports Senior Games remain a critical waypoint for players hoping to earn scholarships and advance their careers. With continued support from local organizers and academic partners, the tradition is poised to grow even further.
