Denison University taps Jalen Rhea to lead next chapter of basketball
Denison University announced this week that Jalen Rhea will join the program as an assistant coach for the 2026‑27 season, bringing a blend of championship experience and player‑development acumen.
Rhea comes to Denison after a successful stint at Gettysburg College, where he helped the team capture the 2026 regular‑season Centennial Conference Championship and secure the 2026 Centennial Conference Tournament title. Under his guidance, the Bullets also advanced to the first round of the NCAA tournament in both 2025 and 2026, earning Coaching Staff of the Year honors in 2026.
Before his coaching career, Rhea played collegiately at American University, contributing to a 2013‑14 squad that won the Patriot League Championship and earned a 15th‑seed NCAA tournament berth against 2nd‑seeded Wisconsin. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a minor in marketing, and he previously ran a player‑development training business in Columbus.
Head Coach Chris Sullivan praised Rhea’s passion for developing young athletes and highlighted his understanding of the balance between academics and athletics at Denison. Sullivan noted that Rhea’s background aligns perfectly with the university’s mission to foster holistic growth in its student‑athletes.
The hiring reflects Denison’s commitment to elevating its basketball program while maintaining its strong academic reputation. Rhea’s appointment is expected to deepen recruiting pipelines in Ohio and Pennsylvania and to reinforce the university’s competitive edge in the Centennial Conference.
A strategic fit for Denison’s future
Rhea’s blend of on‑court success and off‑court mentorship positions him as a key figure in shaping the next generation of Denison players. His experience in high‑stakes conference play and NCAA tournament exposure should translate into immediate competitive advantages for the program.
As the university looks ahead to the 2026‑27 season, the addition of Rhea signals an ambitious push to contend for conference titles and beyond. Fans and alumni alike anticipate a season filled with renewed energy and strategic growth under his guidance.
