Sound Transit Readies for 2026 FIFA World Cup with Expanded Services and Accessibility Upgrades

The agency is boosting capacity, improving access and rolling out multilingual tools ahead of the tournament.

Sound Transit, the regional transit agency serving the Seattle metropolitan area, is rolling out a comprehensive set of upgrades in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the first World Cup to be hosted in the United States that will feature matches at Seattle’s iconic stadium.

Expanded Capacity and Service Adjustments

To accommodate the surge of visitors, Link light rail services will run more frequently on match days, and additional Sounder commuter trains will be scheduled for the six games at Seattle Stadium. Special event trains will be added on selected dates, while a handful of regular services will be temporarily canceled to make room for these extra runs.

Accessibility Enhancements

The International District/Chinatown station now has all escalators and elevators operating, ensuring smoother movement for passengers with mobility needs. Several stations have received new ORCA readers and upgraded accessible waiting areas, and BikeLink lockers will be offered free of charge on match days. Bicycles and scooters are prohibited from Link and Sounder trains on those days, a measure designed to keep platforms clear for high‑volume travel.

Community Voices and Multilingual Tools

Messages from soccer star Megan Rapinoe and former Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin will be broadcast throughout the system, adding a personal touch to the travel experience. The Good Maps app, which assists riders with navigation, is now available in 25 languages across all 1 and 2 Line stations, helping international guests find their way with ease.

Further details about summer transportation options, including schedules for the Tacoma T Line extension that will run later into the evening for night matches, can be found on Sound Transit’s website.
