Michael Claybrooks, a Hillsboro graduate with more than two decades of coaching experience, has been appointed boys basketball coach at McGavock High School. His hiring comes as the Raiders look to rebound from a 1‑19 record in the previous season and rekindle the tradition of excellence that last culminated in a Class AAA state championship in 1976.
A Coaching Journey Rooted in Development
Claybrooks previously served as an assistant coach at Christ Presbyterian Academy, where he contributed to player growth and team strategy. He also spent time at the AAU level, leading the Mookie Betts Travel Club and honing advanced skill development techniques that have shaped many young athletes.
In a statement, Claybrooks expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the McGavock program, emphasizing his desire to build a winning culture grounded in value‑driven principles. He highlighted the importance of character, teamwork, and continuous improvement as the foundation for future success.
Looking Ahead
The new coach will inherit a program with a rich history but recent struggles on the court. His appointment is seen as a chance to leverage his extensive background and strategic vision to restore competitiveness and reconnect the team with its storied past.
