Iowa State’s football program has been busy shaping its 2027 and 2028 recruiting classes, but the recent loss of a committed prospect has introduced a new challenge for the Cyclones.
A pivotal moment for the Cyclones
Three‑star linebacker Keaton Wollan, once pledged to Iowa State, announced his switch to the Wisconsin Badgers after just one month in the fold. Ranked as the 11th‑best player from Wisconsin and inside the top 100 linebackers nationally, his departure removes a key piece from the Cyclones’ defensive plans.
The shake‑up comes as the program adjusts to a leadership change. Former head coach Matt Campbell departed for Penn State, opening the door for Jimmy Rogers to take the reins. Rogers, who previously served as an assistant at Iowa State, inherits a roster that has seen a wave of transfers following Campbell’s exit.
With the coaching transition, the Cyclones have turned to the transfer portal to plug gaps left by departing players. The staff is actively evaluating prospects who can provide immediate depth, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Despite the setback, Iowa State remains active in the recruiting market. The team currently holds seven verbal commitments for the 2027 class and sits 52nd nationally and ninth within the Big 12, according to the latest rankings.
The coming months will test the resilience of the Cyclones’ recruiting strategy. How quickly they can replace Wollan and reinforce the defensive unit could set the tone for the upcoming seasons.
