A New Chapter for the Ladybirds
Chris Ellis, a Hall of Fame basketball coach celebrated for surpassing 650 career victories, has accepted the head coaching position at North Callaway’s girls basketball program.
Ellis brings a résumé that spans professional stints in the WNBA, collegiate roles at Maryville University, and head coaching posts at Parkway South, Webster Groves, Whitfield and Fatima, where he honed a style that blends rigorous fundamentals with a cognitive, player‑centered mindset.
In his first remarks, Ellis highlighted the Ladybirds’ work ethic and openness to learning, noting that his ‘kind yet firm’ approach seeks to challenge players while fostering enjoyment of the game.
The hiring is also personal for Ellis, who shares a professional connection with Superintendent Dr. Kenya Thompson, a relationship he says will help align the program’s ambitions with the district’s broader educational goals.
Having previously guided teams to state quarterfinal and Elite Eight appearances, Ellis plans to devote 15 to 20 minutes each practice to raw fundamentals, a routine he believes builds the foundation for sustained success.
His philosophy centers on talent as the most critical strategic asset, and he intends to leverage that strength while encouraging the squad to embrace both competition and personal growth.
Community members and players alike anticipate that Ellis’s blend of experience, structured instruction, and supportive challenge will revitalize the program and aim for deeper postseason runs.
