The football program at Fountain‑Fort Carson High School has taken on an unexpected role as a steward of the city’s streets, launching a clean‑up effort that blends sport with service.
Student Da’Kari Releford Jr. suggested the idea as a way to earn volunteer‑hour credit, and his proposal quickly gained traction among teammates and coaches who saw an opportunity to give back to the community.
A Season of Service on the Streets
After reaching out to the City of Fountain’s Parks and Recreation department, the team was granted permission to adopt sections of Jimmy Camp Road, Ohio Avenue, Main Street and Santa Fe Avenue for regular maintenance and litter removal.
On the first day of the initiative, a large group of players and supporters gathered to pick up trash, clear debris and sweep both sides of Jimmy Camp Road between Ohio Avenue and Link Road, demonstrating a strong turnout and enthusiasm.
The effort extended to the adjacent corridors of Ohio Avenue, Main Street and Santa Fe Avenue, where students continued the clean‑up with the same energy, covering a total of several miles of roadway.
Coaches said the project has already sparked conversations about future service activities, and the school hopes to make the road‑adoption a recurring component of the season, turning each game week into an opportunity for community improvement.
