Rebuilding the Gators: Transfer Portal Moves and Graduations
The Florida Gators baseball squad saw its season conclude with a 10‑2 defeat to Troy in the NCAA Gainesville Regional final, a result that underscored both the team's potential and its fragility.
Nine seniors will depart, among them starting catcher Karson Bowen and left fielder Blake Cyr, leaving a sizable void in the lineup that will need to be filled through the transfer market and upcoming draft decisions.
Among those expected to be selected in the 2026 MLB Draft are pitcher Liam Peterson and right‑hander Kyle Jones, whose impending professional contracts will further reshape the roster.
Coach Kevin O’Sullivan has already begun addressing the gaps, announcing the addition of pitcher Maddox McDougall from Jacksonville State University, who brings a 2.76 ERA from the 2026 season, and catcher Jon Embury, a No. 2 Baseball America prospect from Florida Gulf Coast University.
The departures also include infielder Cade Kurland, who chose to transfer to Louisiana State University, and left‑handed pitcher Rivers Kurland, who entered the portal but did not see action in 2026.
Other notable moves involve infielder Kolt Myers, who logged extensive playing time but fell out of the final lineup, and outfielder Blake Brookins, who also entered the portal with two years of eligibility remaining.
Right‑hander Cooper Walls, who posted a 7.17 ERA during the season, was pulled early in the regional loss, highlighting the need for pitching depth as the team looks ahead.
The incoming talent, combined with the experience of returning players such as Christian Rodriguez, McCall Biemiller, Matthew Jenkins and Cooper Moss, sets the stage for a competitive rebuild as the Gators aim to return to the super regionals next year.
