A Season of Transformation
Stetson Kane, a senior at Ballard High School, has become the centerpiece of the Bombers' baseball squad in 2026. Once a modest .269 hitter as a sophomore, Kane now tops the lineup with a .393 average through June 9, showcasing three home runs, 13 runs scored and 12 RBIs while also stealing ten bases.
His rapid ascent is not just a statistical surge. Kane’s quick wit and infectious energy keep the clubhouse loose, a trait that coaches and teammates alike value as the team battles for the Raccoon River Conference championship and a berth in the Class 3A state tournament.
The journey has been marked by perseverance. After a junior year in which he batted .241 with six doubles, one home run and 11 RBIs, Kane altered his approach, focusing on making hard contact. The result has been a 1.362 OPS that ranks among the most impressive senior campaigns in recent memory.
Defensively, Kane patrols center field and occasionally takes the mound, posting a 1-1 record with a 2.47 ERA over 5 2/3 innings. His 20 putouts and just two errors reflect a disciplined fielding mindset that complements his offensive contributions.
Leadership and Team Impact
Coach Mike Furlong has repeatedly highlighted Kane’s leadership as a catalyst for the team’s cohesion. “His perseverance and talent have set a standard for the entire squad,” Furlong said, noting that Ballard sits atop the conference standings with a 4-0 record.
Beyond the numbers, Kane’s commitment to a simplified, hard‑hit approach has inspired younger players to embrace confidence at the plate. His pledge to continue at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls adds a narrative of growth that extends beyond the high school season.
With the Bombers eyeing a special season, Kane’s blend of power, speed and poise positions Ballard as a legitimate threat in the conference race and a potential contender for a state tournament appearance.
