Midnight Soccer Lights Up NYC
New York City has turned to the night to keep the soccer spirit alive, opening five public fields for overnight pickup games that run from 10:30 p.m. until 8 a.m. through mid‑July.
The program, dubbed NYC Open Play, is a collaboration between the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation, New York City FC, NYC Footy, and the Hudson River Park Trust. Each borough hosts a lit field equipped with goals, cones and balls, and staffed by security personnel and Parks Enforcement Patrol officers to ensure safety.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who championed the initiative, said the best way to celebrate the World Cup is by playing soccer, turning public spaces into late‑night pitches where anyone can join.
Players aged 18 and older can sign up individually or as a team via nycopenplay.com, with the option to join a squad on the spot. NYC Footy will be on site to rotate teams, organize skill‑level matches and create a welcoming atmosphere for newcomers.
The fields — Calvert Vaux Park in Gravesend, Chelsea Waterside in Manhattan, Astoria Park in Queens, Soundview Park in the Bronx and Fairview Park on Staten Island — will each feature up to three 7‑v‑7 pitches, allowing multiple games to run simultaneously.
Community Impact and Free Access
All participation is free, and the city hopes the late‑night slots will encourage more residents to engage in sport without conflicting with daytime commitments. By partnering with local clubs and community groups, the program also offers free clinics and additional soccer activities throughout the summer.
City officials say the initiative not only promotes health and recreation but also strengthens neighborhood ties, giving residents a unique chance to play under the stars while the city watches the World Cup unfold.
