Georgia’s baseball program has not seen a College World Series appearance since 2006, but a renewed sense of purpose is taking hold in Athens.
A June Window for Roster Change
The NCAA’s transfer portal opens each year from June 1 through June 30, a brief but pivotal period during which coaches can add or lose talent in a matter of weeks.
Wes Johnson, now in his second season as head coach of the Bulldogs, has turned that window into a strategic advantage, using it to reshape the roster in ways that were previously unimaginable.
A Master of the Portal
Last season Johnson oversaw the addition of 22 players via the portal, a move that helped the team climb back into contention and set the foundation for future growth.
A Fresh Arm in the Mix
Among the newest arrivals is Luke Howe, a freshman pitcher who transferred from Long Beach State. In his previous campaign he posted a 5‑4 record with a 5.04 ERA, throwing 85 2/3 innings while allowing just three home runs.
Howe’s blend of size, poise and a proven track record has already generated buzz among teammates and analysts alike, who see him as a potential cornerstone for the staff.
Johnson believes that the combination of seasoned transfers and fresh talent like Howe can accelerate the Bulldogs’ ascent toward the national elite.
Aiming for 2027
The ultimate goal is clear: return the program to the College World Series by 2027. Achieving that will require not only on‑field improvement but also sustained development of the players Johnson brings in through the portal.
If the early signs are any indication, the Bulldogs may be poised to surprise many when the 2025 season begins, setting the stage for a longer‑term push that could culminate in a championship run just a few years down the line.
