A Community Celebration of Service and Sport
Gastonia’s police officers and firefighters are set to face off in the annual Battle of the Badges charity softball game on Friday, June 12, at Sims Legion Park. The free‑to‑attend event will kick off at 5:30 p.m., offering a family‑friendly atmosphere that highlights the camaraderie and competitive spirit of the city’s first‑responders.
Attendees can look forward to a variety of activities, including food trucks serving local favorites, K‑9 demonstrations that showcase the capabilities of police canine partners, and an opportunity for children to explore fire trucks up close. At 5:45 p.m., Special Olympics athletes will take the field for a wiffle‑ball showcase that adds a playful twist to the evening’s festivities.
All donations and sponsorships generated during the event will benefit the Special Olympics of Gaston County, an organization that provides athletic opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. By tying the competition to a charitable cause, the game amplifies community support for a program that relies on public generosity to thrive.
Capt. Chris Waldroup of the Gastonia Police Department remarked on the growing preparation of the firefighters, noting that "the firefighters have been training hard and are ready to turn the tables this year." While the police department looks to defend its recent winning streak, both teams emphasize that the event is about more than bragging rights — it’s about giving back to the community that supports them.
Residents, businesses and visitors are encouraged to come out, enjoy the festivities and show their support for the brave men and women who serve Gastonia. The evening promises not only exciting softball action but also a celebration of local unity, with every cheer and contribution helping to empower Special Olympics athletes across the county.
