Each June, the PHATS/SPHEM Hockey Summit transforms the sunny shores of Marco Island, Florida, into a hub of activity for the unsung professionals who keep the game running smoothly. Equipment managers, conditioning coaches, trainers and medical staff from NHL teams, NCAA programs and CHL clubs converge for a multi‑day gathering that blends education, vendor showcases and professional networking.
A Mandatory Meeting of Hockey’s Backbone
The NHL has made attendance compulsory for at least one equipment manager and two medical staff members from every team, underscoring the summit’s growing importance in the league’s operational framework. This requirement reflects a shift from a casual meet‑up to a structured forum where league officials, including deputy commissioner Bill Daly, closely monitor progress and safety initiatives.
This year’s edition featured more than 185 vendors, among them longtime partners such as True Hockey, occupying 211 booths — the largest participation to date. Attendees explored the latest equipment innovations, tested new products and engaged in hands‑on demonstrations that will directly influence the gear used on the ice during the upcoming season.
Education, Certification and Player Safety
Medical staff used the summit as an opportunity to refresh their certifications and licenses, ensuring that the latest protocols for injury prevention and treatment are firmly embedded in team practices. Sessions led by NHL senior vice‑president of player safety George Parros and other safety experts focused on standardizing care and reducing concussions across the sport.
The evolution of the summit mirrors the broader professionalization of hockey operations. What began as a modest gathering of equipment managers has become a critical touchpoint for the league’s strategy on player health, equipment standards and cross‑organizational collaboration. Participants left with a renewed sense of community and a clearer roadmap for advancing safety measures at all levels of the game.
