Warriors Secure Griffin Darby in Multi-Pick Deal
The Moose Jaw Warriors announced a blockbuster acquisition on Tuesday, bringing in 17-year-old defenceman Griffin Darby from the Portland Winterhawks in exchange for a package of draft selections.
The transaction, which also involves a 2027 CHL Import Draft first-round pick, a 2027 fifth-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick and a 2028 sixth-round pick, underscores the Warriors’ intent to reinforce their blue line ahead of the upcoming season.
A Young Defenceman with Proven Potential
Darby, a native of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, arrives with a résumé that includes 110 WHL appearances for Portland, where he logged two goals, 20 points and 62 penalty minutes. He was originally selected in the first round of the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft and broke onto the scoresheet with his first WHL goal on February 12, 2026 against the Victoria Royals.
Prior to his WHL stint, Darby excelled with the Swift Current Legionnaires, posting four goals and 25 points in 39 games during the 2023-24 campaign, and he once topped the scoring charts among defencemen on the Swift Current U15 AA Broncos with six goals and 35 points in 28 games.
General manager Jason Ripplinger praised the addition, stating that Darby’s blend of experience and leadership will complement the team’s defensive core and provide a steady presence on the ice.
Fans in Moose Jaw have greeted the move with optimism, anticipating that the young blueliner will help the club push for a deeper playoff run. The trade also signals a strategic shift toward building a more seasoned roster while preserving future draft capital.
