A Milestone in a Growing Career
Michaela Bahl, a St. Paul referee, was recently crowned the MSHSL Girls Hockey Official of the Year, an accolade that highlights her steady rise through the ranks of competitive hockey officiating.
Bahl began her officiating path in 2016 in San Diego, California, and has since accumulated experience at the collegiate level, in IIHF tournaments and a variety of high‑profile events, including the Minnesota High School Girls’ State Tournament.
During a typical season she estimates she works around 150 games, balancing the physical demands of keeping up with fast‑moving play with the mental focus required to interpret multiple rulebooks.
The recognition from players, coaches, parents and fans underscores how vital positive feedback is for officials whose contributions often go unnoticed, and Bahl describes the camaraderie among officials as a close‑knit family.
Looking ahead, she aims to officiate in the Premier Women’s Hockey League, the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four and, ultimately, the Olympic Games, with a ceremony honoring her and other award winners scheduled for June 15 at Target Field.
