Among them is redshirt junior Deakon Tonielli, who has moved from a largely scout‑team presence to a more prominent figure in the program. After redshirting in 2023 and limited action in his first two seasons, Tonielli broke out on special teams in 2025, earning the team’s Most Improved Player honor after appearing in all 13 games.
His performance earned him two starting opportunities, during which he caught eight passes for 72 yards. Standing at 6‑foot‑5 and 246 pounds, Tonielli brings a blend of size and athleticism that coaches say could be especially valuable in short‑yardage and goal‑line situations.
Coaching Praise and Physical Potential
Freddie Whittingham, the team’s tight ends coach, has publicly praised the depth of the room, noting that Tonielli’s physical traits complement those of his peers. ‘We have a lot of versatility,’ Whittingham said, highlighting the potential for creative package plays that can exploit mismatches in the red‑zone.
Hogan Hansen and Zack Marshall are also listed among the starters, though Marshall is currently recuperating from shoulder surgery. If Tonielli can maintain his recent level of play, the coaching staff may find ways to increase his snap count throughout the upcoming season.
