Blue Jackets Sign Malatesta to One-Year Deal

23-year-old forward adds depth and physicality as club eyes 2026-27 season

The Columbus Blue Jackets announced Tuesday that they have reached an agreement with forward James Malatesta, inking him to a one-year, two-way contract that will carry him through the 2026-27 season.

At 23, the Montreal native adds a physical edge and depth to a roster that has been seeking additional toughness after a challenging recent stretch.

Malatesta’s professional journey began when he was selected in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL Draft, a milestone that followed a prolific junior career with the Quebec Remparts.

In the American Hockey League, he has appeared in 154 games for the Cleveland Monsters, recording 30 goals and 24 assists while leading the team with 87 penalty minutes during the 2025-26 campaign.

His NHL résumé includes 13 games with the Blue Jackets, where he has contributed four points — two goals and two assists — showcasing his ability to translate AHL success to the big stage.

The 2023-24 season marked a personal high, as he posted career-best totals of 12 goals and 22 points in 56 AHL games, underscoring his offensive development.

A New Face in the Lineup

General manager Don Waddell praised the signing, noting that Malatesta’s blend of grit and skill fits the club’s evolving identity and will provide valuable depth as the team looks ahead to the next season.

Waddell also highlighted the player’s experience on the international stage, pointing to his Memorial Cup MVP and QMJHL Playoff MVP awards as evidence of his clutch performances under pressure.

The organization is confident that Malatesta’s familiarity with the Blue Jackets’ system, combined with his proven track record in high-stakes games, will make him a key contributor both on and off the ice.
